Masonry Contractors Chicago
Tuck Pointing
Proper grinding is a critical step for a long-lasting tuck pointing job. Basic Brothers union masonry contractors are trained to safely grind the joint without causing damage to the surrounding area. We will match the color and texture of the mortar with the surrounding masonry by providing samples.

Our Tuck Pointing Process
We grind all mortar joints to the minimum depth of three-quarters of an inch or until sound mortar is reached. The joint has to be properly cleaned, and new mortar is applied in three layers to prevent shrinkage cracks. After the mortar has had sufficient time to cure, we will return and clean the new mortar. This is an additional step and takes a bit more time, but it allows for the new mortar to match the surrounding mortar as closely as possible.

Concrete Structure Repair
Over the years, the reinforcement steel within the concrete begins to rust and expand which therefore causes the concrete to crack and deteriorate. Often times, this can also result in the concrete dislodging from the building and falling.

Basic Brothers masonry contractors start by demolishing the affected concrete to allow for access to all sides of the steel reinforcement. Depending on the damage, we either replace the reinforcement or clean and coat it. All of the edges are keyed in, as well as anchored to the existing concrete wall or ceiling, to ensure that the patch stays. We then either patch the concrete or form out and pour new high-strength concrete formulated specifically for concrete repairs.
Lintel Replacement
Much of our work addresses deteriorated embedded steel, which can hide behind the cosmetic and structural issues within the masonry. This is caused by steel deteriorating and expanding, which causes damage to the surrounding masonry.

Some contractors ignore this issue and instead simply tuckpoint the cracked joints. While this is a temporary solution, it doesn’t solve the root cause of the problem. Further deterioration of the steel will cause the joints to crack again, as well as the surrounding masonry. Basic Brothers masonry contractors focus only on providing our customers with long term solutions. To permanently solve the problem, the masonry must be removed, and the steel will need to be reconditioned or replaced. New flashing and weeps would be installed to modern specifications.
Stone Foundation Repair

Terra Cotta Repair
Terra cotta restoration and repair is different from other cladding because it is:
-
A common 20th-century building material
-
Used in varied climates
-
Designed with special material characteristics
-
Integrated with a building’s structural systems and has been in service for over 100 years

Like any masonry building material, terra cotta installations are subject to water infiltration and freeze-thaw damage, so terra cotta restoration must address expected unit spalling and cracking repairs and masonry joint damage. Because terra cotta designers so frequently make use of polychrome units and glazes, terra cotta restoration contractors must be prepared to restore a wide range of colors and finishes. Basic Brothers masonry contractors provide these important services.
Brick Repair
Damaged, cracked, or severely deteriorated brick should almost always be sawed out of the wall and replaced with new units. We understand how important is to maintain your property’s value and appeal so if you don’t have extra matching bricks, we have access to a large inventory of hard-to-find brick, and expertise in creating special colors and textures. There is truth in the old saying, “Brick that doesn’t match will look like a patch.”
Brick Wall Sealing
Unfortunately, masonry is never completely waterproof because bricks are made of clay, shale, cement, gravel, chip, and sand. Even walls made from fired bricks can admit moisture if laid incorrectly or with unsuitable mortar. Our more than half a century experience working with Chicago’s buildings give us a significant edge over our competitors in the industry.

Walls are not subjected to standing water, but they are affected by moisture that can lead to structural damage, mold and more. Basic Brothers masonry contractors apply a special coating that protects your masonry walls and adds to their life span giving you peace of mind.
Restoration Cleaning
If the original beauty of your building is hidden by years and years of corrosion, soot and grime, Basic Brothers masonry contractors can help. We use safe, effective cleaning agents to clean your structure and bring it back to its original luster.
